Frequently Asked Questions About Our Movie Theater in Portland
Theater
Our doors open 30 minutes before the start of our first movie. Our doors close 20 minutes after the last movie starts. Our concessions counter generally closes for sales 45 minutes after the start of the last movie.
Yes, you may purchase tickets online by clicking the showtime pills under the Showtimes page. You will be directed to the ticketing portal.
PLEASE NOTE: Advance ticket sales guarantee admission to the movie, but do not guarantee where your seats will be.
We do not have assigned seating. All seating is first come/first served.
Yes, but only if tickets for those seats are already purchased. Please do not save seats if you have not purchased tickets for them.
We recommend arriving 30 minutes early to get a good choice of seating, particularly for evening shows and weekend matinees. We generally open our theaters for seating 30-45 minutes before showtime. The closer to showtime that you arrive, the higher the chance there is of the movie selling out or having poor seating options (front row, no seats together, etc).
We only show two trailers before the feature and no ads, so the movie starts about 4 minutes after the listed showtime.
No, we do not rent out our theaters for any public or private events. The Academy Theater changed its policy in 2016 and no longer offers theater rentals for private parties, film premieres, school functions, corporate events, alternative functions, etc. Independent films and special screenings may be taken into consideration by Academy management for public exhibition, but all content decisions are made exclusively by the Academy Theater, and we do not offer any rental or “4 Wall” contracts.
Yes. All of our theaters are at least partially accessible by wheelchair. All of the theaters have some percentage of seating that has stairs and is not wheelchair accessible, but all have designated wheelchair areas with seats that the end armrest raises. Our bathrooms and front doors are also wheelchair accessible.
Yes. All of our theaters are climate-controlled to stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter, so beat the elements and come watch a movie!
We offer discounted tickets ($6.50) for children 12 and under and seniors 65 and older. $6.00 matinee pricing for movies before 3:00 PM.
We have 3 theaters, all with 2K digital projectors and 5.1 Dolby surround sound. Our largest theater seats 130, the next largest seats 70, and the smallest seats 65. Our large theater is also capable of projecting 35mm film.
Movies
Our website lists all known movie showtimes. Any showtimes beyond those dates listed have not yet been determined. For the most part, our movies are scheduled for one week running from Friday – Thursday. A new schedule is determined by Tuesday afternoon and posted on our website when it is finalized. PLEASE NOTE: Even if a movie is continuing for another week, the showtimes will likely change starting Friday, so be sure to check the new schedule for accurate showtimes.
If showtimes are not listed for an upcoming movie, then the time has not yet been determined. Occasionally, we do not know in advance what other movies will be available to us each week making it is difficult to lock in specific showtimes in advance. Once a showtime is determined, it will be posted on our website.
Yes. We have 2 kinds of closed captioning devices, a small monitor that attaches to the cupholder on the armrest and discreetly plays captions on a small screen or glasses that project the captions onto the glass. We also have headphones that amplify the sound of the movie or deliver a descriptive audio track or both. Closed captioning and descriptive audio tracks are available for most movies, but they are not available for some, especially our classic repertory films.
With only 3 screens, we are limited in the number of movies we can show in a day. Rather than run only 3 titles at all available showtimes, we choose to offer a wider variety of movies, generally showing 6-9 different titles at varying showtimes. This means that not all of our movies can show within a specific time frame (i.e. between 6:30-7:30). We try to make the best determination of what times will best suit particular titles, but some titles must be placed at showtimes outside of the “prime time” hours (or any specific time frame) for a variety of reasons. Often the alternative would be to not show the movie at all.
Sure! We love getting feedback about what you’d like to see. Feel free to email manager@academytheaterpdx.com with your suggestions. Also send an email if you are an independent filmmaker or distributer and would like us to take your movie into consideration for a screening at the Academy.
Food and Beverage
No. This includes pizza from Flying Pie. While we do sell Flying Pie pizza, we are a separate business from Flying Pie, so we do not allow food bought there to be brought into the theater. Outside alcohol brought in is grounds for removal.
Pizza options are limited to the slices we have on hand (or on order) and we do not take orders for whole pies. However, we will take special orders for dietary restrictions such as gluten-free or vegan pizzas. Please call at least 1 hour ahead of your arrival (if possible) and place your order with the Academy Theater (not Flying Pie) at 503-252-1705. We will require payment with a credit card at the time of the order.
Yes, order a drink at the concessions counter and enjoy it in the theater. We do not sell hard alcohol, only beer and wine. We do not have an off-premises alcohol license, so we cannot sell any beer/wine to go, or fill growlers.

Positions open without any degree of regularity, but we are always accepting resumes for consideration when we have a spot to fill. If you would like us to consider your resume for any potential open positions, feel free to contact manager@academytheaterpdx.com or drop off your resume in person.
We keep all found items in our lost and found for at least a month. If you think you lost something, give us a call (503-252-1705) and we can check for you. Items lost in the theaters often don’t turn up right away, particularly if it was lost that day. If you think your item may still be in the theater (stuck in the seat, etc.) we will be happy to take a look for you, just let us know roughly where you were sitting. If there is currently a movie showing, we will check when that movie ends. We will not disrupt (and will not allow you to disrupt) a movie in progress to look for a lost item.
Yes! All ages are allowed to all shows, with or without parental accompaniment, except under 17 are not allowed to rated R movies without parental accompaniment.
Yes, we sell gift cards in any amount that can be used for tickets or concessions. If you live out of town and are unable to purchase a gift card in person, we are happy to take your information over the phone and mail a gift card to wherever you would like. Call 503-252-1705 and ask to speak with a manager to buy a gift card over the phone.
The Academy Theater does not have a parking lot. The parking lot behind the theater belongs to Vinje’s Sheet Metal and is not for use by theater patrons. Street parking on SE Stark St and within half a block of Stark is posted by the city as One-Hour Parking at all times and the city does patrol and ticket this area from time to time. Street parking half a block or further off of Stark St (including SE Washington St, the one-way running east) does not have any parking time constraints.
TriMet’s 15 bus line has stops within a block or two of the theater (SE 78th & Washington for eastbound and SE 80th & Stark for westbound). Also the 72 line has stops 3.5 blocks away (SE 82nd & Stark for north & southbound). Additionally, the 20 line has stops a few blocks away (E Burnside & 79th for east & westbound) which runs 24 hours a day.
